Riding the subway I was becoming a bit annoyed as it occurred to me that “Intelligent Design” is just moving the goal posts around in the big ideological game between a divine creator and a “divine” nature. The goal posts could be called “irreducible complexity”, that is, that there are certain life functions that are just too complex to have happened by random genetic mutation.
It relies on definitions to keep the small space left open to the creator. This space shrinks. It is similar to the creationist allowance for genetic adaptation within a species (much like what dog breeders take advantage of) and not genetic adaptation from one species mutating into a new one. They use human-created categories to shore up their theory and faith.
They are not willing to take the big risk - to find God in all things while coming close to finding God exists in no place.
Instead they choose to remain in the familiar western dichotomy of a normalized, predictable nature of eternal laws, and an arbitrary arbitrary creator.
